Vitamin D
The main physiological function of vitamin D is to increase the ability of the small intestine to absorb calcium and phosphorus, thereby maintaining adequate blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. This allows normal bone mineralisation, affects skin cell differentiation, regulates the activity of immune system cells and affects the transmission of hormone-sensitive genes, which regulates the production of many proteins. It should be noted that vitamin D's important role in maintaining healthy bones can only be ensured if an adequate intake of calcium is provided in addition to an adequate intake of vitamin D.
